A selection of truly amazing wines from Spain's most famous wine-making region, this case consists of 4 red wines, 1 sparkling and 1 white. All are sensational!
Vinedos de Aldeanueva Fincas de Azabache Tempranillo Blanco Brut - Limited edition sparkling white Rioja. Traditional method, 4 months on the lees to add some texture. Fruity aromas of green apple, citrus and lovely floral blossom. Well balanced with vibrant acidity and fruity finish.
Roda Rioja Reserva - From vines over 30 years old, yields are kept to a very low 1.5kg per vine that results in a concentration of intense aromas of crushed red cherries and savoury herbs and ripe, spicy, structured fruit on the palate with soft tannins and a long finish. Deep cherry colour. The nose is deep, fruity and delicately spiced whilst the palate provides flavours of cherries and silky, fine grained tannins. An overall feeling of freshness, this wine oozes delicate elegance.
Gavanza Rioja Reserva, Bodega Maetierra Dominum - A bright ruby red with a golden rim in the glass, On the nose, scents of plums and black cherry. On the palate, smooth and rich with smoky notes. Flavours of liquorice and sweet spices. The finish is elegant and lingering. Great food wine with grilled herbed lamb chops, Patatas a la Riojana (potato & chorizo stew) or braised Basque Chicken with chorizo & sherry vinegar.
Hacienda Grimon, Rioja Reserva - Hacienda Grimón is run by brothers Paco and Eliseo. From their 25 hectare base in a secluded corner of the Rioja Alta, they produce organic wines that accurately reflect the subtleties of their family estate. The majority of their wines experience extended ageing, therefore great care is taken to ensure that all grapes are as healthy as possible. As a result, no herbicides or pesticides are used at any stage and hand harvesting is employed for all their vineyards. The Reserva offers a great deal more structure on the palate than the Crianza, while also displaying far more prominent oak flavours. A combination of dense, plummy fruit and a good tannic structure ensure that this is a Reserva that offers incredible value for money.
Bodegas Benito Urbina, Urbina Rioja Gran Reserva - This wine comes from the best grapes grown on the Estate and it is made using grapes from vines that are all more than 20 years old. It is fermented at a controlled temperature of 28°C and is macerated for the final 28 days, followed by at least 36 months in oak and a further 48 months ageing in bottle. This wine was made using 90% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo. Aged 24 months in American oak casks and 36 months in bottle. Reddish-garnet, splendid ripe, complex nose, harmonious, well-balanced oak and fruit tannins, intense rich fruit, great finesse, velvet smoothness and wondrous length.
Marques de Murrieta, Capellania Rioja Blanco - A modern take on a classic white Rioja style. Smoky, nutty nose and palate with bold vanilla oak flavours and dried stone fruit character. For all the oak power there is a superb balance and texture, with a vein of fine acidity and long almond finish. Really develops in the mouth. 100% Viura. From a single vineyard block at 485 metres above sea level in Rioja Alta. Free run juice fermented in a mix of stainless steel and new French oak barrels with subsequent 20 month aging in oak. A real food white wine. Yes perfect with paella, also smoked fish, white meats and Asian style cooking. Very good with mature white cheeses such as ewe’s milk, also asparagus and hollandaise sauce.
