Luxury South African Case!
Take a luxury trip to South Africa with our fantastic selection of 2 whites, 3 reds and 1 sticky highlighting the quality and diversity of South Africa....
Newton Johnson, Albarino - Matured for 8 months in stainless steel (55%), a large concrete egg vessel (20%) and old, bigger volume barrels (25%) with no fining nor light filtration before bottling. FInd white peach and quince fruit with a beeswax/lees character. Airy scents of apple blossom and honeydew exhilarate the senses with an austere edge of apple skin. The waxy texture envelops the palate, succulent in the middle, and the flavour protracted by delicate acidity and the grip of mealy grape tannin. A very tasty Albariño!
Hamilton Russell Vineyards Chardonnay - A true Grand Cru of South Africa, from a winery very close to the sea. That means ocean cooled fruit and in this wine, great finesse and balance. Fermented and aged in French oak, it combines mineral zip with ripe fruit and spice. Phenomenal! Hamilton Russell was founded in 1975. This iconic estate is a renowned Pinot Noir and Chardonnay specialist. Their philosophy is well summed up by Anthony's words: "we are using Pinot noir and Chardonnay to express the beauty and personality of Hamilton Russell Vineyards" - like Burgundy, the wines very much express their terroir. Fermented in a third new French oak and aged in barrel for 9 months, this is a fine, complex white.
Southern Right Pinotage - A highly individual expression of South Africa's unique red grape. This is an intense classically styled wine, packed with complex berry fruit, beautiful tannins and subtle wood spice. Following fermentation the wine was aged for around 9 months in a mix of new and previously used oak barrels which nicely rounded the primary fruit. Full ripeness and the longer hang-time afforded by cooler sites, combined with the complex, more classic fruit aromas and structure resulting from clay-rich soil make really showcase the capabilities of this variety. Great with spicy and smoky meat dishes, in fact, most things from a classic South African Braai are made for it.
Meerlust Rubicon 2018 - Quintessential Rubicon nose with violets, ripe plum, cedar wood, fennel, and intense spiciness. A typical liquorice note also evident on the nose. Still young and intense, the palate is full bodied, structured but packed with fresh dark fruit and rounded tannins. This Bordeaux style blend is 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot.
Reyneke Cornerstone 2018 - The Cornerstone has always been an important wine within the Reyneke range, with the proceeds of the wine helping the farm workers and their families. The workers being the cornerstone of the business. The components consist of 41% Cabernet Franc, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Merlot. An intense sorting process of bunch selection and berry selection ensures that the best fruit from our biodynamic vineyards are selected. Fermentation takes place in concrete Nomblot fermentors. The wine spends 18 months in French oak barrels, 30% new and 70% second and third-fill. This classical Bordeaux style blend combines freshness with a real intense concentration, showcasing the best of Stellenbosch. The wine presents with spicy cherries, cassis and mulberry nuances. Undertones of tobacco leaf and blackcurrant, are what ads more to a defined graphite minerality.
Jordan Wine Estate, Mellifera Noble Late Harvest Riesling - Delicate and floral with a ripe apricot and spring blossom bouquet and the well-balanced acidity adds elegance to the long, rich finish.
