For this Christmas we have interviewed some of our team at EWWines to find out what they will be drinking and eating which we will share in this blog, our festive drinks guide. Some fun for the festive season and an introduction to other corners of our extensive list which you may not have explored yet or may enjoy to revisit!

Victoria, our Finance & HR Manager will be enjoying Christmas lunch with Charles and their family. They have decided to outsource the cooking and are heading to Penrose kitchen for their festive meal, what a fantastic idea! Victoria is a “sucker for a good pudding wine” and has selected very carefully. She will be enjoying Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes 1er Cru Classe 2017 whom are adjacent to Château d'Yquem. This is a rich and decadent choice from the exceptional 2017 vintage, perfect selection to accompany fire side cheese and biscuits.

Charles our Owner / Director who is a hard man to pin down, especially in the run up to Christmas because he has a very full schedule! He has family here for Christmas and sharing Victoria’s plans as previouslydiscussed. His wine of choice is Domaine Rossignol-Trapet,Gevrey Chambertin which is one of the best Gevrey Chambertin village wines available and a fantastic choice to complement all the trimmings that Penrose kitchen will be serving. Nothing says Christmas more for Charles than Taylors 20 year old Tawny Port which “he is not sharing”!

John our Warehouse Manager was asked in between receiving pallets of Christmas winesabout his Christmas festive choices. He has a young family, so his day will start very early he is certain! Mid-morning after presents he is planning to start with Cornish Chacuterie Salmon Pate with lemonBodegas Gallegas Pirueta Albarino we think this is a great choiceand combination! They are eating Roast beef with all the trimmings for their festive lunch. To accompany this John is going to turn to one of his favourites, the Sons of Eden Kennedy which is a classic GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre) blend from the Barossa valley and full of red and dark fruits, five spice flavours and savoury herbs. The fleshy mid plate, firm tannins and the weight to pair perfectly with Roast beef. Traditional Christmas pudding will complete John’s festive feast and he plans to serve a late harvest sweet wine from Crete the Lyrakis Liastos – Sun Dried sweet wine.

Paul our Assistant Warehouse Manager took a minute out of his busy work schedule to talk about his festive plans. Christmas is a two-day family extravaganza to celebrate which starts on Christmas eve with a roast pork joint turned into pork sandwiches with lots of crackling! Paul will be pouring Amu Vermentino which is a white from Sardinia that is dry, fresh and exciting with depth of fruit and white flowers. What a combination! Christmas day will be beef wellington with potatoes and trimmings. Paul will serve one of his favourite reds our Boccantino Negroamaro which is full of dark fruits and classic mocha bitterness which will be a perfect combination. The evening is for picky bits and cheeses including aLancashire Bomb with a bottle of Kopke 10 year old Tawny Port too, lucky guests!!

Melissa our Sales Account Manager took a few moments out of her busy pre-Christmas when she popped into the office to share her Christmas plans. She will at her family home and is having roast beef with all the traditional trimmings too and is very much looking forward to opening and sharing with her table Tenuta Musella, Amaronnedella Valpolicella. This a real blockbuster red which will require a few hours decanted but rewards with fantastic drinking and perfect when paired with dark meats such as beef and also hard cheeses if you can resist drinking until the Christmas cheeses appear... or have a second bottle ready!

Jim our Retail Manager will be visiting family this year so hopefully will not have to take much! To toast presents and accompany elevenses a magnum of Frolic Lost in the Field Pet-Nat which is light, fruity and great fun. It will be being poured generously!! His family will be enjoying Christmas with a traditional turkey with all the trimmings and will be dusting something nice off from his dad’s cellar (hopefully!) along with a magnum of Morgon Cote du Py which is drinking very well indeed and great for getting in the festive mood! With a Twill Cellars Pinot Noir for any festive wine emergencies that may occur along the holiday days.

We will finish with some festive advice!! When all the presents are open and you’ve napped through some Christmas telly, don’t overlook a good old gin and tonic. Our range is extensive from classic dry to navy strength to Christmas and other flavoured gin and our top tip; do not skimp on your tonic! Currently we love the newly released Loveday Kissing Gate which has a touch of warmth from Camomile, fresh gorse for a touch of sweetness and is a perfect festive gin. Best served with a slice of lemon and tonic. Alternatively, you could keep it festive with one of our Cornish Christmas Gin’s such as Tarquin’s Figgy Pudding Gin which has a festive in-store glass promotion running currently. Great for either a festive Fig-roni or with ginger ale with a slice of orange to keep it festive and fun.

However you are celebrating, have a very merry Christmas from all the team at EWWines.
