Barolo Pira 2017

Pira is a Roagna family monopole situated in Castiglione Falletto. With 4.8 hectares of vines, it is their largest vineyard. Of the monopole’s distinctive character, Monica Larner writes: “Pira is easy to recognize in terms of bouquet, thanks to those distinctive aromas of dried rose petal and balsam herb that lift gently from the bouquet.” This is delicate, nuanced Barolo with superb length and precision.

Over the last decade, Luca Roagna has established himself as one of the stars of Piedmont, ever willing to take risks in the vineyard and cellar to improve his already spectacular wines. To taste his wines upon release is a visceral experience; to open a bottle after a decade is a revelation. At Ellis Wharton Wines we are proud to work with this trailblazing estate, bringing Luca’s brilliant wines from the Roagna cellar to your table.

“The 2017s are showing the sunny side and hedonistic pleasure of the Nebbiolo grape,” Luca tells us. Luca’s wines embrace vintage variation; after decades of painstakingly preserving old Nebbiolo vines, their deep roots benefit from water reserves beyond the reach of younger vines. Whilst neighbouring estates harvested on average three weeks early, Roagna picked just one week early, preserving all the complexity that the Nebbiolo grape needs time to harness.

2017 was a solar vintage, but with enough rain during the summer. Whilst it was an early vintage for others, Roagna picked later than anyone. Luca concludes that 2017 “was an extreme vintage in terms of temperature, with risk of high concentration, but vineyard management helped us retain water in the soils, and the vines did not suffer from drought.”
