Saintayme 2017 is 100% Merlot from a 9 hectare plot and a joy of supple fruit and easy flow. Not complex, but hard to fault for sheer fruit. Nice acidity keeps it fresh to the finish, and the tannins are fine. Denis Durantou's 'entry level' wine that is to say the wine not produced at his flagship Pomerol estate, Chateau L'Eglise Clinet. Denis is quite rightly very proud of his 2017s, referring to them as a 'rare triplet' (with 2015 and 2016). 100% matured in one year old barrels.
"Ripe fruit with chocolate, spice and hints of raisins. Full body, round and juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. Really delicious. Drink now. 92/100" James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com (January 2020).
"Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Saintayme delivers expressive black cherries, mulberries and boysenberries scents with hints of rosehip tea, tilled soil and spice box. Medium-bodied, the palate has plenty of juicy red and black fruits with a plush texture and refreshing finish." 90/100 Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (March 2020).
