A new wine from Taaibosch, this is a Bordeaux-style blend with a (double) twist: some Helderberg Syrah and a splash of Sangiovese bring freshness and a touch of olive tapenade to the more classic graphite notes, with fine tannin grip on the finish. This is a really charming, approachable wine from Schalk and his team. Notes of morello cherry, and also plenty of cinnamon and clove spice. Just delicious, and great value.

Schalk-Willem Joubert's aim is to turn Le Chant Rouge into a widely distributed premium brand like The Chocolate Block and he's certainly on the right path. Merlot based, with the remaining 58% made up of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and bits and pieces of Syrah, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese it's a subtle, refreshing red with notes of plum, red berry and tomato leaf and understated oak. Tim Atkin MW timatkin.com (September 2023)
