Gavanza Rioja Reserva, Bodega Maetierra Dominum

The enterprise is owned by the Vintae group which specialises in producing Riojas in the modern style. It is an innovative, young and dynamic enterprise run by José Miguel Arambarri Terrero one of Spain's leading wine entrepreneurs who works alongside his 2 sons, Ricardo and José Miguel. Maetierra Dominum itself has revolutionized the concept of 'Vino de Pago' or Estate Wines. The grapes come from 4 vineyards situated in 4 different zones within La Rioja, each of which possess specific characteristics owing to the combination of soil, climate, and grape variety. 'Gavanza' is a blend of mainly Tempranillo with the addition of a little Graciano and Garnacha Tinto and spends 14 months in new French oak barrels before release.

A bright ruby red with a golden rim in the glass. On the nose, scents of plums and black cherry and the palate is smooth and rich with smoky notes. Flavours of liquorice and sweet spices. The finish is elegant and lingering. Great food wine with grilled herbed lamb chops, Patatas a la Riojana (potato & chorizo stew) or braised Basque Chicken with chorizo & sherry vinegar.
