"Intense, vinous nose with a touch of clove to the cassis and red cherries. Lush, supple fruit with velvety tannins and full body. Crisp acidity and a polished finish full of fruits and spices. Just a bit austere. Drinkable now, but not without potential for 4-5 years of aging." 94 points, James Suckling
Its unmistakable character and strong Tuscan identity can be savoured with all the senses. Exudes aromas and flavours of cherries, blackcurrants, raspberries, minerals and spices. Silky and harmonious on the palate, with just the right amount of structure and vigour on the long finish. A delicate wine in Satta's first-class style: powerful, dynamic, complex and with fine tannins.
Michele Satta is one of the founders of Bolgheri DOC, alongside Tenuta San Guido, Ornellaia, and the Antinori family. Amongst these illustrious neighbours, the Satta family has remained a boutique, terroir-driven producer. Their wines are quintessentially Tuscan in style, and they champion Mediterranean varieties on the coast, working with Sangiovese, Syrah, and Viognier aongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Today, Michele's son Giacomo heads the estate, one of the leading lights of a new generation of Italian winemakers, producing wine with a "fierce spirit of independence" according to Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate.
The 20223 Bolgheri Rosso is 30% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 10% Syrah, and 10% Teroldego. The grapes are cultivated in a high density vineyard (about 6,000 vines/ha) where a harmonious balance with nature is sought - not certified organic, but there is definitely a strong environmental philosophy here. The grapes are harvested manually to allow the selection of perfectly ripe bunches; fermentation takes place with pumping over or punching down but without the addition of artificial yeasts. After 12 months in wood (partly in large 30 hl oak barrels, partly in barriques between 3-5 years old), the wine is bottled and rests in the cellar for 6 months before being sold.
This dangerously drinkable wine is perfect with pappardelle with meat and mushroom sauce.
