Alter Ego de Palmer 2021
Alter Ego de Palmer is a oak-aged red wine made by Chateau Palmer with a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot in the AOC Margaux, in Bordeaux. Chateau Palmer is one of the most prestigious wineries in Medoc. It was set up by British military man Charles Palmer who, in 1814, realised the great quality of the terroirs and dedicated himself to their cultivation and growth. Today, the Sichel family along with winemaker Thomas Duroax are the ones responsible for maintaining this Margaux essence.
Alter Ego de Palmer comes from a vineyard classified as Troisième Cru, but its quality is so high that it is comparable to some Premier Cru. The vines are aged around 40 years old and are planted in extraordinary soils of clay, gravel and sand. The harvest is carried out manually. In the winery, the Alter Ego de Palmer grapes firstly ferment in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, and then the wine ages for 16-18 months in French oak barrels, 25 to 40% of which are new. Alter Ego de Palmer is the result of the complexity of a great terroir and the professionalism of those who work it. A superior quality limited production that expresses the essence of the Margaux denomination.
Baron de Brane 2021
The second wine of Château Brane Cantenac (2éme Cru Classé) enjoys the same gravelly soils as its big sibling in the heart of the Margaux terroir: it tempers 60% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon with small additions of Cabernet Franc and Carmenère that add depth and flavour dimension to the final wine.
Black cherry, cassis and coffee all jump out of the glass, combining with a punchy palate full of dark ripe fruits. There is a touch of tobacco that provides a warming spice to the finish, while silky, ripe tannins create a rich and glossy mouthfeel. This delicious, charming vintage is a wonderful success, offering excellent quality for the price for an introduction to wines of the Margaux appellation!
Brio de Cantenac Brown 2020
The second wine of Château Cantenac Brown is textured and opulent with rich aromas of red fruits complemented by notes of dark chocolate. Full and round, with the red fruit aromas echoed on the palate, the tannins are seamlessly integrated through to a powerful finish. At the beginning of the 19th century, the esteemed animal painter of Scottish descent, John Lewis Brown, bought the vineyard. Designed by Brown in a traditional Tudor style, the château was host to the grand parties for which the owner was renowned. The chateau was sold in 1843 to a banker (Gromard), the owner in 1855, when the estate was granted a Grand Cru classification. 150 years later the Simon Halabi family has given new impetus to the estate with the ambition of raising it to the highest echelons.
The vineyard covers 42 hectares (104 acres) and has the gravelly soils, typical of the Médoc area. The attractive white stones reflect the sun’s rays onto the fruit in daytime whilst at night they radiate the heat retained during the day. Grape varieties are 48% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc that produce subtle wines with an intense bouquet and are well-suited for bottle ageing. The vines have an average age of 35 years and are pruned using the double Guyot method. Vine density ranges from 8,500 to 10,000 stocks per hectare and yields 4,500 litres per hectare.
Chateau Kirwan 2022
A 3rd Classified Growth of 1855, Château Kirwan is produced in the appellation of Margaux. Covering an area of 40 hectares, the vineyard is located on a gravelly hillside in the Pyrenees. The wine is aged in barrels, 50% of which are of new oak. The 2022 vintage blends 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The Château Kirwan 2022 reveals a clever balance of texture, boldness and tannins.
The wines are fresh, bright with fruit and simply spectacular. Thanks to the new vat, the grapes are accurately expressed as pure, clear and elegant. Barrel ageing is perfectly integrated and the fruit aromas are truly dominant.
