A complex nose with hints of nuts, pastries and caramel. This is a beautiful Cognac, made by Leyrat in the Fins Bois region, both produced and bottled on the Maillard estate.
Complex, with spice, wood and nutty aromas. Pastry and butterscotch to begin, along with a hint of dry leaves, ginger and nutmeg. Supple and silky on the palate. Initially quite dry, with a long clean finish of vanilla.
If there’s one thing that Leyrat Cognac do exceptionally well, it’s single-estate Cognacs. Their XO Hors d'Age Cognac is a fine example of their prowess. With grapes grown entirely in the Fins Bois terroir, this award-winning bottle has been aged for at least 30 years, but some eaux-de-vie within the blend can be 40, 50 or even 100 years old.
Perhaps the secret to such distinct and supple Cognac is the triple aging process that the Cognacs undergo before bottling.
The Cognac has been aged in new Limousin oak casks for 6-12 months, then in slightly older casks between 4-12 years old, and then moved to older casks to finish their aging process. The result is an intensely refined and delicate spirit.
The Leyrat Fins Bois estate is grown with Ugni Blanc grapes at 4000 vines per hectare, and the average age of their vines is 30 years old. The Master Distiller adapts his methods according to each harvest, to make sure that the characteristics of every year are maximized.
Founded in 1850, Cognac Leyrat believe that blending eaux-de-vie from one exceptional estate is the key to producing distinct character and strength within a Cognac. As a result, this XO Hors d’Age produces a long, clean finish often found in Leyrat Cognacs.
Produced from 70 hectares of vines, Leyrat Cognac is the brainchild of Francis Abécassis. It lies on a site that receives optimum sunlight exposure, and is ideally orientated to grow the best vines. The chalky soil is the key to producing a subtle, aromatic Cognac with fantastic maturation potential.
