Maremosso Catarratto is the new name for our popular Baglio Antico Catarratto, a Sicilian orange wine made up of 100% Catarratto grapes. Ripe peachy and tangy pink-grapefruit aromas which contrast nicely with the almost marmalade and spicy ginger notes on the palate. Certified organic grapes and winery, minimal intervention throughout. This is super food-friendly and it's a knockout with fish curries.
Limited fining agents are used and only a basic filter is applied to the wine before bottling. As a result some bottles show a small amount of very fine lees sediment in the bottom of the bottle, but with this comes the benefit of greater flavour, texture and mouthfeel to the wine, rather than being stripped bare as you will find with more commercially made white wines.
If you are not familiar with orange wines, then this is a great place to start without breaking the budget. This little Sicilian wine offers all of the characteristics of natural, orange wine at a fraction of the price. Made by the excellent people at Ciello in Alcamo, Sicily, the Cataratto grapes spend a few weeks macerating with the skins during the wild yeast fermentation and the wine is bottled with low sulphur and no filtration. Rich, pithy fruit character, savoury herbs, ginger, spices and more abound. A great little glass of orange, ideal for curries and such like, great with a 'Pasta con le Sarde', the classic Sicilian peasant dish from the region.
The dynamic Vesco family took over the winery 10 years ago and have since revolutionised the viticultural practices and invested heavily in cutting edge technology for the winery and bottling line. Their one hundred hectares of organic vineyards are located high up in the hills above Alcamo. The wines are all certified organic and planted on south-east facing slopes on sandy soils 150 – 300m above sea level. The climate is clearly suited for producing the best quality grapes. The results of their excellent work are evident in the fragrant crisp Catarratto that they produce at outstanding value. The wine is a million miles from the overripe styles made by many of their peers. Night harvesting and modern temperature controlled fermentations result in a bright, fresh Catarratto with a pleasant trace of pink grapefruit, apple-skin with soft almond on the finish. The wine is unfiltered and has an encouragingly hazy appearance, excellent natural wine at a great price.
