New Year at EWWines!

Posted by EWWines on 30th Dec 2022

EWWines are planning our ticketed events for 2023 and will introduce our line up and discuss what makes the perfect tasting evening in this blog episode. We also love to create and host bespoke tasting events using the same formula to ensure you have the best experience. Visit our courses and events page for more details and we plan to add more events in the near future too! We will then look at the basic technique for wine tasting to ensure you are tasting like a professional and having the most fun possible. Have you considered studying wine? Maybe EWWines Wine School would help you along your wine journey - after all the New Year is a brilliant time to set new goals and commit to developing yourself.

What makes our perfect tasting evening?

EWWines want to create a series of premium events that offer an informative, fun and inclusive opportunity for all our customers from both the on and off trade with speakers who will deliver the best experience for everyone. Excellent, but humble story tellers with passion for their products is essential, with excellent product knowledge and good fun firmly the focus.

Our warm hospitality and our passion for the products and delivering the best experience for our customers during our events sets the tone for each evening.

Quality and variety of products are extremely important. As you can see from our planned events list, we consider both when deciding our line-up.

We utilise our large and well-lit warehouse shop (with plenty of free overnight parking!) to welcome and host our events. This space sets the tone for the evening and allows our customers chance to mingle and break the ice before we begin. Lighting is important during tastings so customers can visually assess and compare the tasting lineup too.

Generosity! We offer a welcome drink as standard to greet our customers which again starts the evening well. We show a minimum of six products during each event with a selection of food nibbles chosen to complement each product with the theme for the evening firmly in mind too. Utilising our product range and local neighbours Da Bara Bakery as much as possible, after all, it is always good to have good neighbours.

Good glassware, we pour into Schott Zwiesel Sensus Wine Tasting glasses. This glass was developed by the German Wine Institute and is elegant and perfect for tastings and feels more premium than a regular ISO tasting glass.

We take the same approach to our bespoke tastings; except we have flexibility with venue – i.e. we can come to you too! We can create the theme and deliver our tastings with the same formula we just discussed.

Basic Wine Tasting Technique

There are many schools of thought to tasting wine but at its most simplistic it is about finding a way to observe and consider what is in your glass! Wine Folly have simplified the process with this brilliant image.

It is important to judge the look of the wine, how it smells (primary, secondary and tertiary aromas), how it tastes and feels in your mouth – sour, bitter and sweet and its structure (acidity, tannins, alcohol and length) and to think about a conclusion. It is these conclusions which will (hopefully) stay in your long-term memory to allow comparisons between wines for many years to come. Questions such as; Was the wine balanced? Did you like it? What was memorable or unmemorable about the wine? Are fundamental for your conclusions and will help develop your palate and recall ability.
