Louis Latour Macon Lugny Les Genievres is probably one of Louis Latour’s best known (and very good value for money) white Burgundies. This is a beautiful wine with a light golden pale robe and greenish highlights, with muscat-like aromas and notes of liquorice. Offering a crispy and creamy elegance with notes of citrus fruit with a beautiful intense finish. Macon-Lugny has no oak ageing or fermentation and is produced in state-of-the-art temperature controlled in stainless steel tanks.  It has an excellent roundness to it, ready to drink now but will age surprisingly well.

As the name would suggest it comes from the Maconnais wine-growing region located in the south of Burgundy, west of the Saone River. As well as Macon Lugny and other Macon village wines, the region is also home to other wine-growing appellations including Macon Prissé, St Veran, Viré-Clessé, Pouilly Vinzelles and, arguable the most famous wine of the Maconnais, Pouilly Fuisse.

The Latour family have long been established in Burgundy’s wine trade. They began as vine growers in the village of Aloxe-Corton as early as 1768 and went on to establish today’s business, Maison Louis Latour, in 1797. Today they are one of the most famous producers and negociants in Burgundy and remain family-owned after 11 generations. Maison Louis Latour also own their own cooperage and make over 2000 barrels per year.

The grapes for Louis Latour Macon Lugny Les Genievres are rigorously selected from the well-exposed commune of Lugny, which 30 years ago, was the only Macon village planted with Chardonnay due to its ideal Chardonnay-growing terroir. With its clay and limestone soils and warm climate, Lugny is often considered to be one of the top vineyards in the region of Southern Burgundy. The 100% Chardonnay grapes undergo a traditional vinification with fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel vats. The wine also undergoes malolactic fermentation. The wine is then allowed to rest for 8 to 10 months in stainless steel vats prior to bottling.

If you are wondering, Genièvre, is the French name for Common Juniper.
