Our Semillon Block Series comes from Barracks 1 and 16 of our Batuco field, one of the coldest places in the dry interior of the Maule Valley. These vineyards are 100% dry land, planted more than 80 years ago and are located only 30 km from the Pacific Ocean, which gives a greater freshness to their wines. Its soils are granitic in different states of decomposition, coming from a mixture of granite decomposed in situ and transported.
The Bouchon family's winemaking story began in 1887 when Emile Bouchon settled in Chile having moved over from his native Saint Emilion in Bordeaux, but it was in 2015 that Vina Bouchon rebranded as Bouchon Family Wines, highlighting the Bouchon family's heritage combined with a forward thinking attitude that aims to bridge past and future generations in both wine style and design. The Bouchon vineyards are located between the slopes of the Coastal Mountain range and the alluvial terraces of the Maule Valley. The region's soils are amongst some of the oldest in Chile (approximately 120 million years old), and are composed of granitic rocks with a high degree of decomposition, producing wines of great structure and length. Its hot summers, with drastic temperature fluctuations between night and day, are ideal to achieve great colour concentration in the grapes. Bouchon are making truly remarkable wines, with a strong sense of place, while retaining the purity of each variety.
The traditional Bouchon winery is a simple construction of adobe walls and clay floor dating from the beginning of the twentieth century. They use high quality French oak barrels of 225 litres and French oak fudres of 2,500 litres as well as clay amphorae. In addition, they also use antique 18,500-litre cement tanks, which allow them to vinify separately their best red grapes. For working separately, our stainless-steel tanks have temperature controlled jackets which ensure a cool, slow fermentation.
