La Grande Année is Bollinger’s Prestige Cuvée and is only produced when exceptional vintages occur. The grapes come exclusively from Grand and Premier Crus and only use the ‘cuvée’ juice in the making of La Grande Année. The first fermentation is always carried out 100% in old oak barrels, which has become quite unique in Champagne. The Cru’s are fermented in small oak barrels which enables a rigorous selection. Once the wine is bottled the second fermentation and cellar ageing are conducted under natural cork. This method, nowadays very seldom used in Champagne, is a guarantee of freshness. It allows the aromas to preserve all their bouquet. La Grande Année then ages in the cellars for at least 5 years. Wonderfully scented, fresh hay nose with a glorious, rich minerally taste. Honeyed orange zests, long and persistent and even more dreamy and biscuity the next day under a pressure top, which augurs well for the future.

The classic blend of 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay from 21 crus, the majority of the Pinot in the blend hails from Aÿ, Verzenay, Bouzy and Verzy, while most of the Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Chouilly, Oiry and Vertus.  The 12% abv fizz was fermented in aged oak barrels and has a dosage of 8g/l. According to cellar master Gilles Descôtes, the sparkler is “full, fresh and complex”, with notes of “almond, hazelnut and honey” on the nose, and a “silky texture with a long, refined finish”.

TASTING NOTES: The delicate colour and golden hues are a sign of the wine’s maturity and Bollinger’s wine-making methods. A first impression there are aromas of fresh almonds, then yellow-flesh fruit aromas evoking peach and mango; toasted, roasted notes accompanied with dried citrus and pink grapefruit. On the palate tehre is a lovely aromatic fullness with honey flavours and a smooth chalky texture; candied lemon notes and a delicious bitterness, a wonderfully refreshing finish.

FOOD PAIRINGS: Foie gras, fresh or pan-fried. Guinea fowl. Grilled fish, with or without sauce, lobster or langoustines. Roast lamb or veal. Parmesan or Comté.
